Water-based paint vs. solvent-based paint: what's the difference?
For exterior and interior painting, painters nowadays mostly choose water-based (water-thinnable) paint, but solvent-based paint is still used in specific spots. The difference lies in composition, smell, drying time and application.
Water-based paint
Water-based paint is thinnable with water, has less of a sharp smell, dries faster and is more environmentally friendly than solvent-based paint. Modern water-based systems have improved greatly in durability and coverage, and are now used on almost all our exterior and interior painting work.
Solvent-based paint
Solvent-based paint bonds slightly more firmly on some difficult surfaces and has a longer open time, which is sometimes still preferred in specific situations or on older paint layers. The downside is a stronger smell, longer drying time and less environmentally friendly use.
DIY, or better to have it done?
With the right preparation and materials, some parts of choosing the right paint and materials can be done yourself, especially for small-scale, easily accessible work.
