Painting or varnishing a staircase: which is more durable?

Opaque stair paint
Opaque, wear-resistant stair paint protects the wood well and is available in any colour, but it completely hides the wood grain.
Transparent varnish coat
A transparent, wear-resistant varnish shows off the wood grain but often reveals wear marks on the treads sooner than an opaque finish.
