How many coats of paint does exterior woodwork need?
Exterior woodwork is rarely finished in a single coat. A complete paint system usually consists of a primer coat, possibly an intermediate coat, and a topcoat, each with its own function.
Structure of the system
The primer coat provides bonding on bare or repaired wood, the intermediate coat (if used) builds up layer thickness, and the topcoat gives the final colour, sheen and weather protection. When repainting a healthy existing layer, sometimes only the topcoat is needed.
Why not in a single coat
One thick coat of paint dries unevenly, bonds less well and offers less protection than several thinner coats that are well matched to one another. That is why we always work with a built-up paint system rather than a single thick coat.
DIY, or better to have it done?
With the right preparation and materials, some parts of choosing the right paint and materials can be done yourself, especially for small-scale, easily accessible work.
